[Linux] Format USB Drive To NTFS Using Ubuntu

Sometimes you may want to reformat USB drive to another format ; such as FAT, FAT32, NTFS.... today I will show you how you can do that using program called GParted !

P.S : sure you can use the command line to format your drives but in this tutorial I will use program that use graphic interface .

How To Format Your Drives !

1. You have to make sure that you have the applications needed for that , go to "System" > "Administration" and check if there is program called "GParted" in the list , if yes skip to step 3.

2. [This step needs Internet connection] In case you don't have GParted then you have to download it using "Ubuntu Software Center " go to "Applications" > "Ubuntu Software Center" and then type in the search box "gparted" you will see program called "Genome Partition Editor" then install it .

3. [This step needs Internet connection] Now we have to make sure that we have appropriate support for NTFS format , so go to "System" > "Administration" > "Synaptic Package Manager" , then type in search box "ntfs" , you have to install the one with black dot next to them check the pictures below, especially "ntfs-3g".

P.S : make sure that your synaptic package manager is up-to-date by choosing "Reload" button in the top of the screen.

4. Now , after installing all requirements , go to "System" > "Administration" > "GParted"

5. Then choose from the right corner of the screen the appropriate partition for your drive , usually the USB drive takes /dev/sdb or sdc partition (mine was /dev/sdb).

6. Unmount the drive by clicking left click on it and choose "Unmount".

7. After unmount the drive, left click on it again and choose "Format to" and you will see various types, choose whatever you want!

That's it ! after finish formatting your drive you can name it by the option "Label" and now its ready to use, you can mount it again or simple unplug and plug it again!
